NIGHT'S ATOLL : Photo-luminescent Hoop Earrings

The Night's Atoll hoop earrings were commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria Design Store in 2019 for Melbourne Design Week 2020.

The enigmatic earrings were inspired by an unexpected and captivating experience of bioluminescence whilst standing in dark night waters at the junction of ocean and river in mid-coast Queensland.

For Fairman, this experience raised a question - how does one draw a line around or hold the evanescent phenomenology of time or atmosphere of being?

The silver hoop structure is a composition of castings of marine debris found around the site of the design's conception - barnacles, cartilage, seaweed. The resin crystal eruptions are infused with photo-luminescent pigment, which charges in sunlight and glows vivid aqua in darkness.

Their light- and time-sensitive photo-luminescent components bring the wearer into an awareness - of the phenomena of the time and space which they move through, as the earrings respond to the rise and fall of light.
Just as those shadows pass across the sea,, the photo-luminescent pools reach out with an evanescent light; a micro-cosmology.
