NGV Commission: Auroral Collar, 2017

Fairman's 'Auroral Collar' is a one-of-a-kind statement neckpiece commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria design store in 2017.

The crystalline components of the Auroral Collar are made from hand-cast epoxy resin in an iridescent colour palette inspired by the vivid solar flares of the Aurora Australis.
These resin forms are set into bespoke handmade sterling silver settings, that frame and extend the organic sculptural aesthetic. The structural sterling silver 'cross bars' are cast from gestures of fine twigs.

Her most ambitious wearable commission to date, the Auroral Collar showcases Fairman's enigmatic colour curation, her versatility in working in new materials, and ability to engineer sizeable wearable works that are both elegant and robust, and move with the body.

The Auroral Collar was launched at NGV design store in December 2017. The piece was sold to private US collectors on 14 February 2018.
